International Relations and Area Studies (IRAS)

Registration and requirements:

International Relations and Area Studies (IRAS) is an undergraduate interdisciplinary programme that offers a rigorous international and comparative perspective on the contemporary global system and different regions of the world. Its aim is to foster creative thinking about complex global problems and to equip students with the analytical tools, language expertise, and cross-cultural understanding to guide them in that process. Our degree provides a solid grounding in international issues together with an opportunity to specialise in a particular region or specific subject. You will learn how the international system has evolved, and engage with scholars in debates about dilemmas dominating contemporary international politics.

Our research and teaching spans the full spectrum of topics in International Relations and Area Studies, including international politics and economics, development, global governance, ethics of international affairs, conflict resolution and peace building, regional integration, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. Additionally, the programme offers an in-depth analysis of politics, economics, security, cultures, and societies in various regions of the world.

The second and third years of the programme allow you to focus on one of the three specializations: International Security, Area Studies or Politics and Culture. Choosing a specialization will give you a concentrated and in-depth study of the areas that interest you most.

International Security

In order to ensure that you are able to master the complex challenges of the post-9/11 world, this specialization module views security from a broad theoretical and historical perspective, placing traditional security concerns in the context of such fields as development, economics and human rights. We will introduce you to the main concepts and approaches to the study of international relations and security and encourage you to analyse, interpret and evaluate world political events and issues. You will focus on a diverse range of topics, including strategy, global politics, foreign policy analysis, political economy, intelligence, homeland security, military analysis, regional security and conflict resolution.

Area Studies

This specialization will give you a solid grounding in understanding politics, economic cooperation, interstate relations, cultures and societies of various regions of the world. You will focus on two chosen regions: Europe, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Americas, the Middle East and North Africa, or East and South Asia. This specialization is ideal for those who wish to explore and understand other cultures and their traditions. It is interdisciplinary and interactive, linking language study with other academic disciplines such as politics, history, economics, sociology, anthropology, literature and philosophy

Politics and Culture

In order to deepen your understanding of the modern, rapidly changing world and the processes that characterize it, you need to focus on culture, identity, cultural conditions and competences. This specialization focuses on the nature of the political world as seen from the perspective of cultural identities and social mentalities. It explores topics such as: global migration, human rights and democracy building, cultural diversity and the role of culture in international relations. As a graduate of International Relations with the Politics and Culture specialization you will acquire critical and analytical skills in political science and international relations, intellectual versatility, multicultural competence and an ability to understand the complexity of contemporary international relations, which will shape the future global order

Global and Development Studies (GLAD)

Registration and requirements:

The BA in Global and Development Studies is an interdisciplinary programme which aims to equip students with an in-depth understanding of the processes of globalisation in various spheres of human activity: law, politics, economy, history, social relations, culture and communication. Students gain core knowledge of the processes of globalisation and international development, the multifaceted aspects thereof and their influence on the contemporary world. The programme is structured in such a way that allows students to focus either on a selected part of the world, or specific global problems and challenges.

The Programme is taught at the Faculty of Political and International Studies (FIPS) of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow – the oldest and the best HEI in Poland and one of the leading universities in the region. This ensures high quality of teaching and a vibrant and inspiring academic environment. The FIPS is a truly multidisciplinary unit, which is of great significance when it comes to issues connected to globalisation and development. We provide expertise in many different areas not only limited to traditional politics and IR, but also fields such as humanitarian aid, environmental protection, public health, media and communication. This is amplified by the fact that various units at FIPS are specialised in specific regions of the world, which allows us to connect distinct phenomena of globalisation and development to particular geographical locations.

Programme graduates will have acquired knowledge of the principal traditional and contemporary trends in global sociology, philosophy, politics and economy. This programme also serves as the first step towards continuing one’s academic career on a graduate and postgraduate level in the fields of international relations, area studies, political science or economy. Graduates are prepared to find employment in public administration, national and international institutions and organisations, non-governmental organisations, international companies, cultural institutions, media and publishing.
