We are honoured to invite you to the inauguration ceremony of the academic year 2022/2023 at the Centre for International Studies and Development, which will take place in the building of the Faculty of International and Political Studies on 4 Reymonta Street, in room 039 on October 11th 14:00.

The inaugural lecture will be given by Dr Ruairidh J Brown: Can we get beyond a Politics of War and Enmity? War, Enmity, and Politics in a Post-pandemic Age.

Ruairidh J Brown received his PhD from the University of St Andrews in 2017. Between 2017 and 2021 Ruairidh taught at the University of Nottingham’s campus in mainland China, where he was primarily tasked with introducing predominantly mainland Chinese nationals to the ‘UK’ higher education system. He received the Lord Dearing Award in 2019 for his efforts in this.

In 2021 Ruairidh became Head of Politics and International Relations at Forward College, a new and novel European higher education institute. He currently teaches Introduction to International Relations and International Political Thought at the institution’s Lisbon campus.

A philosopher and a historian, Ruairidh has published works on such topics as the philosophy of friendship, obligation, and hermeneutic interpretation. He is the author of two books: Political Encounters: A Hermeneutic Inquiry into the Situation of Political Obligation and COVID-19 and International Political Theory: Assessing the Potential for Normative Shift. He also regularly contributes to the European Consortium for Political Research’s blog, The Loop, on topics ranging from pandemic responses to post-truth politics and Scottish independence.
