A debate on varieties of populism in contemporary politics aimes at discussing the evolution and expansion of populist ideas and doctrines as instruments and mechanisms of power and influence. The use and abuse of populist discourses in the relationships between the state and society has been recently a widely discussed feature of political regimes: democratic, illeberal and authoritarian. Assuming that populism is on the rise, especially in Europe and – traditionally – in Latin America, the panelists will present local and sectoral perspectives on contermporary populism, focusing on Latin America, East-Central Europe and Spain.

The panelists taking part in the debate are:

  • Prof. Leonardo Sánchez Ferrer, Faculty of Law, University of Burgos;
  • Dr Natasza Styczyńska, Institute of European Studies, Jagiellonian University;
  • Dr Monika Sawicka, Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, Jagiellonian University;
  • Dr Marcin Fatalski, Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, Jagiellonian University.

The debate will be facilitated by Prof. Artur Gruszczak, Chair of National Security, Institute of Poltiical Sciences and International Relations, Jagiellonian University.
