Difficult heritage of slavery and the transatalantic slave trade

Дата: 31.05.2024
Время начала: 9:45
Место: MS Teams
Организатор: Dr. Elżbieta Binczycka-Gacek, Institute of Multicultural Studies at Jagiellonian University; Dr. Jakub Kościółek Institute of Multicultural Studies at Jagiellonian University; Professor Dariusz Brzostek Institute of Culture Studies at Nicolaus Copernicus University

We invite you to join us for an online seminar exploring how contemporary societies of former colonial territories manage the memory of slavery in their narratives and practices.

This seminar aims to explore how these societies forge their modern identities through what Stuart Hall described as "re-telling history." In the context of the sociocultural domain from which slavery emerges as the shameful economic foundation of modernity, and as a haunting specter over emerging civil liberties (Black Atlantic, colonialism, plantation monocultures), we aim to reveal the ideological, political, artistic, and affective filters through which the modern West (or Global North) has sought to domesticate and rationalize the ethically troubling phenomenon of human trafficking and slave labor. We are also interested in exploring heritage sites and museums that commemorate the slave trade, as well as the various heritage discourses
surrounding slavery's legacy.

SUBMISSIONS

We particularly encourage scholars from the Global South to participate, with hopes that the seminar will serve as a springboard for further collaboration, potentially leading to a collective monograph on the topic.

Submissions are open until May 21 via this Forms link
