History

The Faculty's foundation

The Faculty of International and Political Studies was established by the Jagiellonian University Senate resolution of 19 April 2000. It started to function on 1 October 2001 and, according to the JU Senate resolution of 20 December 2000, consisted of three institutes: of Political Studies and International Relations (formerly at the Faculty of Law and Administration), of Ethnic Studies and Polish Diaspora (the former interfaculty Institute of Polish Diaspora, and the newly created Institute of Regional Studies, aimed to group academics specializing in studies on cultures from all over the world. Until 2005 the School of Polish Language and Culture was also part of the Faculty.

Since very beginning of its existence, the Faculty has been running three study programmes: political studies, international relations (both taught in the Institute of Political Studies and International Relations, founded in 1970 as the second institute of political studies in Poland, whose traditions date back to the beginning of the 20th century when the Polish School of Political Studies was linked to/active at the JU Faculty of Law), and cultural studies (taught at other faculty units with specialties in: American studies, Latin American studies, Russian studies, Ukrainian studies, international cultural studies, and the Middle and Far Eastern studies). Since the Ministry of Science and Higher Education has accepted the plan to create a new programme of study, i.e. European Studies, there have been four programmes of study at our Faculty (earlier the European Studies were also a specialty within the cultural studies programme.

At the moment, the study programme in cultural studies is being run at four institutes: of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, of Regional Studies, of Russian and East European Studies, and of the Middle and Far East. The study programmes in political science and international relations are run by the Institute of Political Science and International Relations. The Institute of European Studies runs the study programme "European studies."
